Dispute Template Letter – 7 Year Reporting Period Has Expired

NOTE: Use this letter to dispute negative accounts that are past the 7-year reporting period. The 7-year clock starts ticking 180 days from the date (month and year) of the first missed payment that led to charge off, collection, foreclosure or repossession. So, when you do the math, the 7 year reporting period is really 7 ½ years (from the last missed payment) that you can expect the derogatory item to come off of your credit report.   Remember:  Only send this letter to the bureau(s) that are reporting the derogatory information.  If you send this letter to one of the three bureaus that is NOT reporting the information, you take the risk of having the derogatory information added to that bureau report.  Send proof of current address, proof of social security number, and send all correspondence via certified mail.
